Barcelona metro pickpockets: the 2026 picture, line by line

Yes, there are pickpockets on the Barcelona metro, but far fewer than a few years ago. Between January and May 2026, crime on the metro and Rodalies trains fell 38% compared with 2025, after reinforced uniformed, plainclothes and TMB security patrols, according to Catalunya Press. Pickpockets concentrate on the central stretches of the busiest lines, and they work inside the carriage and around the doors more than anywhere else: a regional survey found 50.2% of transport incidents happen inside the vehicle and 43.4% at stations. The classic tricks are a stranger stopping dead on an escalator and a grab just as the doors close. Wear your bag in front, keep your phone out of your back pocket, and step away from the doors before they shut.

The Barcelona metro is fast, cheap and mostly air-conditioned. It is also where several of my phones started new lives without me.

I lost a phone on a packed L3 train once. Someone stumbled into me just as the doors were closing, apologised very sweetly, and stayed on the platform. My phone stayed with him. I went on to Drassanes alone.

Most metro advice online leans on news stories from 2019. Things have changed. Police ran a dedicated plan against repeat offenders on public transport, and the numbers dropped hard. This guide has the 2026 picture: which lines, where in the station, which tricks, and what Pla Kanpai is. Is the Barcelona metro safe from pickpockets in 2026?

The Barcelona metro is safer from pickpockets in 2026 than in recent years. From January to May 2026, crime on the metro and Rodalies fell 38%, and on buses 39.6%, compared with the same months of 2025. Uniformed and plainclothes officers worked with TMB security staff, and three ‘Florida’ operations against train-theft gangs led to 23 arrests (Catalunya Press).

For scale: in 2019, about 100 pickpockets worked the metro every day, and tourists were 40% of the victims (Catalan News). Down is good. It is not zero.

Which metro line in Barcelona has the most pickpockets?

The Barcelona metro lines with the most pickpockets are the central stretches police called the ‘red triangle’ in 2023: L1 from Espanya to Clot, L2 from Paral·lel to Clot, L3 from Sants to Diagonal via Drassanes, L4 from Barceloneta to Verdaguer, and L5 from Sants to Sagrada Família. In the first half of 2023 there were about 50 metro thefts a day, and 146 arrests (Metrópoli Abierta).

Notice the pattern. These stretches serve Sants station, the old town, the port and the Sagrada Família: luggage, maps and people looking at their phones for the next stop. I could not find newer per-line figures, so treat this map as a 2023 snapshot.

Where in the station do pickpockets strike?

Pickpockets on Barcelona’s public transport mostly strike inside the train. In the EVAMB 2023 victimisation survey, 50.2% of incidents happened inside the vehicle, 43.4% at stations and 6.4% at street stops. The metro accounted for 58.1% of them, and 74.9% were non-violent thefts (Institut Metròpoli). In other words, you will usually not feel a thing.

The practical version: inside the carriage, put your back to a pole or a wall and your bag in front. On escalators, leave a step of space and keep a hand on your bag.

What tricks do pickpockets use on the Barcelona metro?

Metro security staff and the Mossos describe three tricks above all (Metrópoli Abierta):

The defences are simple. Step back from the doors in the last seconds before they close, keep your phone in your hand or a zipped pocket, and move away from anyone who presses close with a jacket over their arm. The guide to Barcelona pickpocket tricks covers the rest.

Are Barcelona buses safer than the metro?

Barcelona buses saw an even sharper drop. Crime on TMB buses fell 40.7% in the first quarter of 2026. Police arrested 85 people, who had 628 prior records between them, and thefts made up 91.5% of incidents. TMB’s fleet carries more than 4,500 cameras (Crónica Global).

The Guàrdia Urbana also targeted three busy routes, H12, V3 and D20, from January to May 2026: 32 arrests, 185 people identified, 47 phones and wallets returned to their owners, and theft reports down 18% (Moncloa.com). The same habits apply: bag in front, phone away, extra care while boarding.

What is Pla Kanpai?

Pla Kanpai is the Mossos d’Esquadra plan against repeat offenders, launched in April 2025. It targets people with two or more crimes in six months. On its first day it produced 105 arrests, with TMB security staff taking part (Crónica Global).

In its first six months, the plan made 367 arrests and recovered more than 2,000 phones. The Barcelona area holds 78% of the 3,969 such offenders identified in Catalonia (Metrópoli Abierta). And yes, ‘kanpai’ means ‘cheers’ in Japanese (Metrópoli Abierta). Someone in the Mossos has a sense of humour.

Final thoughts

The metro is still where many visitors get robbed, but the trend is clearly down, and the risk is concentrated in a few predictable places: inside the carriage, at the doors and on the escalators. Guard those moments and you have done most of the work.

In Barcelona Pickpocket, streamers in black gis chase pickpockets through the streets. The real metro version wears a Mossos uniform, or no uniform at all, which is rather the point of plainclothes officers. Play it, then ride the metro like someone who knows how the trick works.

Quick questions

Is the Barcelona metro safe at night?
Generally yes. Most pickpocketing happens when trains are busy: a 2019 report found most metro thefts happened between 7 am and 8 pm (Catalan News). Late at night, sit near other passengers and stay awake, because cutting the pockets of sleeping passengers is a known technique.
Which Barcelona metro stations are worst for pickpockets?
In 2023, police flagged central stretches of L1 to L5, including Sants, Drassanes, Espanya, Paral·lel and the Sagrada Família stop. Crime on the metro has fallen sharply since.
Is the L9 metro to the airport safe?
I found no verified theft figures for L9 Sud or the Aerobús. Treat them like any busy line with luggage. At the airport itself, workers describe thieves stopping the escalators down to the taxis (Ara).
Should I report a theft on the Barcelona metro?
Yes. Report it in person at a 24-hour Mossos d’Esquadra police station (comissaria), or book an appointment, and bring the phone’s IMEI. The full steps are in what to do if you are pickpocketed in Barcelona.
Are there police on the Barcelona metro?
Yes. Uniformed and plainclothes Mossos d’Esquadra officers patrol with TMB security staff, and the Guàrdia Urbana runs operations on buses.
Why should I wear my backpack on the front on the metro?
Because half of transport incidents happen inside the vehicle, where you cannot see behind you. A bag in front of you is a bag you can watch.

The YouTube videos that taught me how it works

Getting robbed teaches you that it happened, not how. These creators filmed how pickpockets actually work, and I learned a lot from them. Credit where it is due:
